Re-Creation and BVL: Brightening Veterans’ Lives Together

The New Year marks 33 years of BVL’s partnership with the outstanding traveling performance troupe known as “Re-Creation.” It was 1983 when BVL joined forces with what was then an established USO troupe performing in VA Medical Centers. The BVL leadership agreed that the “Re-Creation” program fit very well with the organization’s mission to brighten the days and boost the spirits of those who have served our country. The same year BVL became a sponsor of the group, “Re-Creation” took over the national programming of the organization. Today, more than 5,000 shows have been presented in VA Hospitals and State Veterans Homes in every ...

New BVL Video Now Available

BVL now has a new video available which movingly tells the BVL story – one of rich history and tradition, the sport of bowling’s promise to America’s veterans, and a call to take up the cause.  With this three-minute video, produced by Ten Pin Marketing, volunteers and potential contributors now have a powerful tool to share with their audiences. “We want to get this video into the hands of every community volunteer out there,” says BVL Board Chairman John LaSpina.  “Through the video, we can effectively explain the need and importance of BVL programs for our veterans.  This message must be communicated to our supporters.” The ...

Horses Healing Heroes

Gulf War Veteran Ben Hernandez still remembers clearly the carnage he witnessed on the infamous “Highway of Death” leading from Kuwait into Iraq. “It was a massacre. It got into my head.” That, combined with a friendly fire attack, plus an enemy bombardment resulted in PTSD issues upon his return. He is in counseling and under the doctor’s care at the Southern Nevada VA Hospital, and he’s better… But discovering the special healing properties through the equine therapy program funded by BVL has really made a difference. Getting outdoors, caring for the horses and having the opportunity to connect with nature brings a smile to his face ...

Get On Board

“Surf’s Up” is not just the rallying cry of Southern California beachgoers – Every September it is the call to recently-injured veterans to try their skills in a variety of water sports at the National Veterans Summer Sports Clinic (NVSSC). Thanks to this event, veterans get the chance to (among other sports) surf, sail, and row. Said one participant, “Sometimes we just need a little push. I think once you try adaptive sports it becomes a motivator to challenging yourself. I’ve done things as an amputee that I would never have dreamed of doing before – not even with two legs.” BVL understands this and has been a long time ...

The Eagle Has Landed in Augusta

Charlie Norwood VAMC “USO” themed game room and billiards room referred to and named by our Veterans as the “Eagles Nest” is their safe haven. The “Eagle’s Nest” offers a valuable opportunity for our Hospitalized Veterans to socialize with others in similar situations. So when they come into these areas specially created for them with funds from the BVL they see in their fellow Veterans someone who may be equally disabled in a different way, it is meaningful interaction. They can share commonality; they no longer are just looking at themselves. They get inspiration from each other and really connect, because none of it is forced. ...

Smooth Strumming

BVL is Brightening Veterans' Lives through the gift of music. A group of veterans at the New York Harbor Healthcare System are finding both spirt and solace by learning how to play the guitar.  Music therapy is a proven path to healing.  See how the days are brighter for a group Veterans thanks to a BVL grant. https://www.flickr.com/photos/144760790@N02/sets/72157673222194371

BVL Recreation Therapy Grants Distributed

BVL is now distributing our 2015 grants, sending hundreds of thousands of dollars to VA Hospitals nationwide for recreational programs and services to meet the needs of the current patient population for each facility.  The grants provide recreational and therapeutic programs and services for veterans in care at our nation’s VA Medical Centers, Vet Centers and State Homes.  BVL picks up where government funding leaves off, providing the ‘extras’ that brighten spirits and boost morale. Thanks to BVL, music, the arts, recreation and sports are incorporated into the rehabilitation process – speeding recovery and sending a message of care ...
