Programs

Since 1942, BVL has worked to identify programs and services to brighten the days and boost the spirits of our recuperating service men and women. BVL provides the ‘extras’ not funded by the government which help speed recuperation and improve morale. Some of our programs, like our annual VA/BVL Veterans Bowling Tournament, are decades-old traditions (now in it’s 70th year), while others, like our “Welcome Home: We Salute You” events and Project Military Music, were just recently launched. We pride ourselves on identifying the needs of our veterans and providing programs to fill those needs in a cost efficient and effective manner. ul...

Happy Holidays from BVL

As I prepare to celebrate the holidays with family and friends, I take time to reflect on 2016 -- both its joys and sorrows -- for me personally, my community, our nation and our world. But, in taking stock of the year, I do take great comfort in the work we do at BVL to support our nation’s service men and women. With your help, we’ve made a tremendous difference in the lives of literally thousands of men and women who have sacrificed for us and for our country. From a “Re-Creation” performance for the WWII vets in the VA Medical Center in Togus, Maine, to a holiday party we sponsored just this week for the vets at the Peninsula Vet Center ...

Painting with a Purpose

Thanks to BVL, veterans at the Ohio Veterans Home in Georgetown are finding their creative spark, as well as learning a lifelong leisure skill, through a special art program designed to provide the tips, tools and techniques to get their juices flowing.   Says Activity Director Melissa Ladd, “The veterans experience so much satisfaction from starting with a blank canvass and working toward a beautiful picture that they are proud to display in their room or share with their loved ones. I personally love hearing the veterans say, ‘There is no way I can do that, I don’t have an artistic bone in my body!’ and with a little encouragement they ...

Re-Creation and BVL: Brightening Veterans’ Lives Together

The New Year marks 33 years of BVL’s partnership with the outstanding traveling performance troupe known as “Re-Creation.” It was 1983 when BVL joined forces with what was then an established USO troupe performing in VA Medical Centers. The BVL leadership agreed that the “Re-Creation” program fit very well with the organization’s mission to brighten the days and boost the spirits of those who have served our country. The same year BVL became a sponsor of the group, “Re-Creation” took over the national programming of the organization. Today, more than 5,000 shows have been presented in VA Hospitals and State Veterans Homes in every ...

New BVL Video Now Available

BVL now has a new video available which movingly tells the BVL story – one of rich history and tradition, the sport of bowling’s promise to America’s veterans, and a call to take up the cause.  With this three-minute video, produced by Ten Pin Marketing, volunteers and potential contributors now have a powerful tool to share with their audiences. “We want to get this video into the hands of every community volunteer out there,” says BVL Board Chairman John LaSpina.  “Through the video, we can effectively explain the need and importance of BVL programs for our veterans.  This message must be communicated to our supporters.” The ...
