Break out the salsa bowls! This spring and beyond, residents at the Fresno Veterans Home will be taking full advantage of the California sunshine thanks to a variety of new outdoors-based programs funded by BVL… Two potting benches will provide the base for a gardening effort where veterans will be planting tomatoes and peppers in elevated gardening beds at the facility (supplies will be kept in the two new storage sheds BVL purchased). After a morning of gardening, veterans can enjoy the sun by peddling around on the new adult three-wheel bikes (complete with safety gear including flags and helmets) or relaxing on two new wooden patio swings. One fish, two fish, calm fish, soothe fish…

Thanks to a grant from the Monmouth County USBC, veterans at the New Jersey State Veterans Home in Menlo Park are experiencing reduced levels of stress and anxiety as they enjoy the palliative effects of watching the fish in their two new giant aquariums purchased thanks to the $9,000 raised by the MCUSBC for BVL. Menlo Park Recreation Director Marsha Lasko noted, “The aquariums provide a peaceful and relaxing atmosphere for the veterans at the home. Residents who are exposed to the beauty of the fish tanks appear to be more relaxed and alert. As we’ve seen in so many studies, the colors and the motion of the fish have a calming effect.”

In 1942 America, the war effort was in full swing; individuals and organizations were coalescing around the troops, and one unique organization was being formed by a favorite American sport:  Bowling. Seventy-five years ago, officials representing every facet of the sport of bowling met to coordinate efforts to support the troops -- bringing together all the sport’s integers to provide the most complete approach to the campaign. Thus, BVL, then known as “The Bowlers Victory Legion” was born. BVL’s first Administrator, A. L. “Ebby” Ebersole noted in the minutes of that meeting: “The Bowlers Victory Legion was organized on ...

BVL provides the ‘extras’ not funded by the government which help speed recuperation and improve morale. Some of our programs, like our annual VA/BVL Veterans Bowling Tournament, are decades-old traditions (now in it’s 70th year), while others, like our “Welcome Home: We Salute You” events and Project Military Music, were just recently launched. We pride ourselves on identifying the needs of our veterans and providing programs to fill those needs in a cost efficient and effective manner. ul...
