| Our father was a veteran of the Korean and Vietnam Wars. The novelist James Michener wrote an article about his service as a scout behind enemy lines in Korea for the military magazine Stars and Stripes. The article was reprinted in newspapers around the country. He was known as the Kandy Bar Kid because he would take a few candy bars and a canteen of water for his overnight missions.
He was awarded the Silver Star and a Purple Heart in Korea and another Purple Heart in Vietnam. Our father retired from the Marine Corps in Alaska where he worked as a longshoreman and enjoyed hunting and fishing. |
